Two Separate Bills – Why It Happens

You may receive two separate bills for anesthesia services — one from the anesthesiologist and one from the CRNA(Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist). This is standard practice when both professionals participate in your care. The anesthesiologist oversees the plan and supervises, while the CRNA administers and monitors the anesthesia.

Each provider bills independently for their role. However, it’s important to note that insurance companies do not increase the total allowable payment when both providers are involved. Instead, the insurer splits the allowed amount between the two providers, typically on a 50/50 basis. This ensures patients are not billed extra but may see two separate Explanation of Benefits (EOB) notices for the same service.
